TRIBECA FESTIVAL TO OPEN WITH BABY MAMA
(BY ALI NADERZAD) This year’s Tribeca Film Festival will open with a lighthearted comedy about two women who share a pregnancy. To be more exact, one acts as surrogate mother to the other’s child. Kate Holbrook, 37 (Tina Fey) is a career-oriented Übermensch who is determined to have a child on her own. Her plans go awry after she discovers that she has a million-to-one chance of getting pregnant. Undeterred, Kate drafts South Philadelphia working girl Angie Ostrowiski (played by the always-funny Amy Poehler) as surrogate mother. Grave differences exist between the two women, surely, and their various clashes are fodder for much amusement. Kate’s well-organized lifestyle comes suddenly undone when Ostrowiski shows up on her doorstep with no place to call home. In a comic battle of wills, they struggle their way through preparation for the baby’s arrival.
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have had long-lasting parts on the weekly live comedy show Saturday Night Live, which has entertained viewers since the mid-1970s. As it were, SNL founder and producer Lorne Michaels co-produced Baby Mama. “It’s an honor for Baby Mama to open the Tribeca Film Festival, said Michaels. We all live and work in New York City, so there is no way we will not get to the premiere on time.” It’s appropriate for the Tribeca opener that Baby Mama was filmed primarily in New York City. This is a feature film directorial debut for McCullers, who used to work as a writer on Saturday Night Live. Joining Poehler and Fey in the cast are Greg Kinnear, Maura Tierney, Holland Taylor and Sigourney Weaver. Tribeca Festival co-founder Jane Rosenthal says, “The creators of this film, both in front of the camera and behind, have been making audiences laugh for years. We look forward to celebrating this crowd-pleasing comedy with our long-time collaborators at Universal.”
