Golden Door (Nuovomondo)
This is everything we want a film to be: imaginative, engaging, surprising, highly entertaining. It is also a microcosm of the millions of immigrants who came to this country at the turn of the last century. Never have the huddled masses been more tired or poor than the Sicilian brothers who manage to get on a boat that will take them to America, the land of milk and giant vegetables. The hoops that these men have to jump through in order to be allowed into paradise give us a cinematographic treat. Symbolic images such as the dreamy sea of milk are some of the most rewarding and pleasurable in recent cinema, especially that they appear so uncontrived and in the story’s natural flow. The actors, including Charlotte Gainsbourg, are perfect, as is the depiction of the era.
Definitely a must-see or a must-see-again.
