CANNES FESTIVAL – YSL on the rise
YSL is mega-hot. This year not one but two different biopics about the French designer are competing for the public’s attention. After Jalil Lespert’s “Yves Saint Laurent” [Weinstein] which is due out in June a new film will be shown at this year’s Cannes Festival called, simply, “Saint Laurent” (no U.S. date of release has been set as of this writing].
For this new biopic Bertrand Bonello, a French filmmaker, decided to focus on ten years of the designer’s life, from 1965 to 1976, the most intense of his life. His is a more nuanced film, mixing intimate events with the official story, blending documentary-life realism with the imaginary.
Gaspar Ulliel (“Hannibal Rising”) will portray the genial creator himself, Jérémie Renier (“Elefante Blanco”; 2012) will play YSL’s lifelong partner and mentor Pierre Bergé, Willem Dafoe will play Andy Warhol, Léa Seydoux will play Loulou de la Falaise and Louis Garrel will play YSL’s lover Jacques de Bascher.
“Saint Laurent” was produced by Mandarin Cinéma and Europacorps.
This film will be shown as part of the Cannes Festival this May 14-25, 2014. Screen Comment will be covering the festival, lock #SCannes2014 and follow us @screencomment.
