BREAKING NEWS: THE SQUARE wins the Palme D’Or
In a short ceremony on Sunday the jury of the Cannes Festival, which marks its seventieth birthday this year, announced the winners, with Ruben Oestlund winning the Palme D’Or for his film “The Square.” This year the jury’s choices seemed more in line with those of the press than in years past. Many of us present at Cannes this year were hoping that “The Square” would get the top prize, or that Diane Kruger, who makes her official debut here at Cannes this year, would get recognized for her performance in the Fatih Akin-directed “In the fade.” Nevertheless “Loveless” (“Nelyubov” in the original Russian) was everyone’s favorite but didn’t win the top prize.
The Camera d’Or award for best debut film went to Léonor Sérraille’s “Jeune Femme” (Montparnasse Bienvenue), definitely one of the more enjoyable films from this year’s Un Certain Regard program. The jury this year was made up of Maren Ade, Jessica Chastain, Fan Bingbing, Agnès Jaoui, Park Chan-wook, Will Smith, Paolo Sorrentino and Gabriel Yared. Pedro Almodovar was president of this year’s jury. Here’s the complete list:
