#cannes2020 is dead. Long live #cannes2020
PARIS – Finally, the suspense is over. Thierry Frémaux, programmer of the Cannes Festival, and Pierre Lescure, President, released today the names of the films that would’ve been screened at Cannes this year, had the event taken place. As we all know, the world went tits up in March, everything got canceled because of a wayward virus, including the Festival, and Donald Drumpf recently held a Bible in front of a shuttered church for no apparent reason other than to pander to his base after America slided into near-civil war due to yet more evidence of police brutality. Soon, things will return to normal, I assume and the pipeline will start churning out great movies and series again.
How not to feel really badly for all of the filmmakers who were expecting to get their film seen in Cannes by the 6,000-or-so festival-goers? And how can one not be moved by Thierry Frémaux, he who led a selecting staff through what must’ve been very trying times, keeping his team together and filmmakers and producers reassured at the same time. Frémaux, who has been involved body and soul in his work as Cannes programmer for over twenty years, must’ve slept badly more than once these last sixty days.
Respect to Mr. Frémaux and to the people who depend on him.
Here’s the full list of films. It’s not altogether clear what future awaits these films. What’s sure is, they were slated for the Cannes Festival, which already lends them prestige. Who will actually see them, and when, will become known soon (the featured image is a still from Sharuna Bartas’s “In the dusk”)
