Hall pass
Could “Hall Pass” be the nail in the coffin for the Farrelly brothers’ careers? A long time ago these guys used to be able to reach into the bottom of the barrel and pull out a real gag–now they just settle for cheap shocks. Their script, which they wrote with Pete Jones and Kevin Barnett, is a good idea that, put in more capable hands could have been a much better movie. Instead, it’s predictable and filled with clichés, dumb people, and lowest common denominator sight gags.
Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis play Rick and Fred, two typical sexless movie husbands whose only thrill in life is catching glances at girls who look like they have futures as anchors on Fox News. Convinced that without their wives they could really clean up, the wives (Jenna Fischer, Christina Applegate) allow them one week off from marriage to do what they please. Only Rick and Fred are the kind of creeps whose pick-up lines all seem to relate to how hard their dick is at the time. They aren’t terribly likable or real, nor is the situation, which never examines ideas of honesty and guilt or even allows these two idiots the mental capacity to really explore their own sexual freedom.
Maybe because the Farrellys are too busy trying to shock. A man takes a dump on a golf course, a woman sprays her crap all over a wall, a man is caught masturbating in his car, two men swing their cocks around, and the humiliation only continues. It starts off sort of funny but as the Farrellys keep trying to one-up themselves it doesn’t take long before “Hall Pass” proves it’s about nothing but.

Hall Pass hits us with some very strong laughs, but ultimately it still doesn't blow us away. I would've liked more of the guys, less of the wives, and more of Larry Joe Campbell. You can't always get what you want, but in Hall Pass it delivers most of what you would want in an outrageous comedy.
