New Jim Jarmusch film completes Cannes selection
“Only Lovers Left Alive” by Jim Jarmusch will be vying for the 2013 Palme d’Or at Cannes. The film was added Friday to the official selection of the festival, which now runs twenty films deep.
The festival has also decided to complete its official selection with “Le dernier des injustes” (the last of the unjusts) by Claude Lanzmann (“Shoah”), which will be screened out of competition. In addition, “My sweet Pepperland” by Kurdish director Hiner Saleem, “Tore Tanzt,” a first-feature by the German Katrin Gebbe and “Wakolda” by Argentine filmmaker Lucia Puenzo will top off the Un Certain Regard section.
“With Only Lovers Left Alive,” which was described by Jarmusch as a “crypto-vampire love story,” stars Tilda Swinton, Tom Hiddleston, John Hurt and Mia Wasikowska. Filming was completed at the end of August 2012. Large parts of the movie were shot in Cologne.
The story of “Only Lovers Left Alive” takes place in the (oft) desolate settings of Detroit and Tangier. A very depressed underground musician who is fed up with people and his strong and mysterious lover reunite. Their love has already lasted several centuries, but her wild younger sister (played by Wasikowska) is destroying their passionate romance. Will these wise and fragile outsiders survive, while the modern world around them is collapsing?
The director won the Golden Camera at Cannes in 1984 for “Stranger than Paradise” and the Grand Jury Prize in 2005 for “Broken Flowers.”
