For your consideration: Brit Marling

For those of us who like nice, clean categories to put people in, it may be hard to get your head around Brit Marling. She’s an actor (she moved to Los Angeles after finishing her Bachelors in Economics and Studio Art at Georgetown University) and she’s a producer (she starred and co-wrote two films that were shown at the last Sundance Festival). She was most recently seen at the Los Angeles Film Festival presenting her sci-fi movie Another Earth (the film was also shown at SXSW).

The film, which Marling co-wrote, superimposes sci-fi with romance. “Sci-fi lets you be a pop philosopher without being didactic,” she told Brett Waltemath of Starwatch Media. Both movies, Another Earth and Sound of My Voice, were acquired by Fox Searchlight. “One of the things that’s cool about when you write something and also act [in it] is that you do a lot of the homework in the writing” (from an interview with Aamer Haleem of the Sundance Channel).

Marling’s path (if there were ever one) to filmmaking is tortuous. Near the end of her studies she interned at an investment firm, embarking on what looked like a promising future. She eventually gave up her career plans to devote herself to the arts. Marling’s raw, youthful penchant and a willful determination to make her contribution to the arts makes her so likeable.
