• Rights to an in-the-works biopic about Yves Saint Laurent were just grabbed by the Weinstein Company. Film is to be directed by Jalil Lespert, according to a recent announcement by the film's French producers. The feature-length film will focus specifically on the early years of Saint Laurent's career when, at the ripe age of 21 he took over the Christian Dior couture house after the designer's untimely death, and three years later, along with his lifetime partner Pierre Bergé, created his own

  • Rallying behind an insurgency borne out of the Arab Spring and emboldened by the fall of Muammar Kaddafi, helping to install a democratic government, those were the missions of French author and philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy’s (B.H.L.) as he traveled between France and Libya last year cameras in tow. As revealed in “The Oath of Tobruk” (a co-directed project shot entirely with Canon's EOS 5D camera) B.H.L.’s involvement

  • I saw Lee Hirsch’s documentary Bully (previously called The Bully Project) at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival, before the sound mix was officially finished; shortly after it was purchased by the Weinstein Company. There may have been a few changes made before its release last Friday so I am writing, as it were, from memory. Bully couldn’t have been timelier. In the thirteen years since Columbine, America has seen an alarming uptick in suicides

  • In disagreement with the MPAA's proposed "R" rating, the Weinstein Company, which produced Bully (set for release this week) has taken the decision to release the documentary without a rating at all. As reported by Entertainment Weekly's Inside Movies blog, the small amount of language in the film that’s responsible for the R rating is there because it’s real,” said director Lee Hirsch of this reversal. What this means is that movie theatre

  • Margaret Thatcher will be portrayed by Meryl Streep in this upcoming biopic slated for theatrical release this December; Thatcher's enormously strong-willed foreign policy and the price she's had to pay for her outsized posturing will form the underpinnings of this day-in-the-life-styled film. Thatcher, who is still alive, suffers from Alzheimers disease and has retired from public life. Other cast members include Jim Broadbent playing Denis Thatcher, the iron lady's husband.

  • Pro: she’s worked with some of the best video directors of all time and probably has been ‘influenced’ by them. I can hear you snicker and shrug, and maybe being a great movie director doesn’t make one a good movie director but there are some notable exceptions: David Fincher or, when he’s actually working, Spike Jonze. So anyway, by osmosis, or otherwise, Madge has known great music video directors and that has to have affected her stylistically. You can’t spend seven days inside a room with Jonas Åkerlund without getting some benefit out of it. And I’m a huge fan of Madonna’s collaborations with New York photographer Steven Klein (one of my very favorites out there).
